In light of the forthcoming 2016 Olympics, Surrey County Council's Commercial Services, which produces over 55,000 meals a day in around 330schools, recently launched a cooking competition in conjunction with Pelican Procurement Services, to encourage primary school pupils to design a two course meal fit for an athlete.

Budding young chefs from across the county donned their aprons and busily developed recipes, cooking them for their family at home before submitting their recipes online via Surrey’s ‘My School Lunch’ website.

The winners were announced as brother and sister duo Leo and Tia Spanbok who attended Oatlands School in Weybridge. Their dishes were cheesy tuna bake followed by date crunchies. The date crunchies already feature on Surrey Commercial Services’ primary school menu.  Leo, Tia and their parents will enjoy a day’s family cooking class with Chef patron Ben Piette in the cooking studio at the London House Restaurant in West Byfleet.

Mark Capper from Surrey Commercial Services said, “We were inundated with submissions and received some excellent recipe suggestions from pupils across the county. The family will assist Ben in preparing and cooking a selection of restaurant dishes and then enjoy the fruits of their labour.”

Mrs Spanbok commented “Leo and Tia were thrilled to hear that they'd won this competition.  We are all looking forward to spending the day with Ben”!

Gabrielle Efford from Elstead-based Pelican Procurement Services, which manages the procurement and supply chain for Surrey Commercial services said: “We were delighted to support Surrey in this campaign that combined creative thinking with healthy eating. We were pleased to create and distribute promotional flyers, as well as providing the prizes for the winners. We would like to extend our congratulations to Leo and Tia who produced great recipes that will now be enjoyed at schools across the county.”

A representative from the London House Restaurant said: “London House is happy to support this competition and Ben Piette, Chef Patronof London House is looking forward to spending the day with Leo, Tia and their parents. Ben will put together a menu that they will prepare and cook, with his assistance, and then they will sit down and enjoy their meal. They will also get an insight into Ben’s world in the kitchen and maybe even learn a few of his secrets together with getting some little extra ‘chef perks’!”

Runners-up will each receive prizes including a chef’s uniform, a baking set and a cookery book.
